亡羊補牢(망양보뢰)

망양보뢰

양을 잃고서 우리를 고치다.
"소 잃고 외양간 고친다"(lock the stable door after the horse is stolen), "말 잃고 외양간 고친다", "말 죽이고 외양간 고친다", "도둑 맞고 사립 고친다"는 속담과 같이, 어떤 일이 이미 실패한 뒤에는 뉘우쳐 보아야 소용이 없다는 의미로 쓴다.
본래는 망양이보뢰, 미위지야(亡羊而補牢, 未為遲也), 즉 "양을 잃고서야 우리를 고쳐도 늦지 않다"는 의미이다.
見兎顧犬(견토고견)은 토끼를 보고서야 개를 부르려고 돌아보다는 의미이고, 같은 표현이다.
늦더라도 안 하느니 보다는 낫다.
뒤늦게야 행동에 나서다.

《전국책 초책사》 견토이고견，미위만야；망양이보뢰，미위지야。
Sending the hunting dogs outside only when one sees the rabbits is not considered too late, and repairing a sheep pen only after a sheep is lost is not considered tardy.
저 멀리 뛰어가는 토끼를 보고서야 개를 부르려고 뒤돌아보아도 늦지 않고, 양이 도망치고 난 후에 우리를 고쳐도 늦지 않다.
    
[해설]
양을 잃고 난 후에 우리를 고쳐도 늦지 않다. "소 잃고 외양간 고친다"는 속담은 흔히 이미 일이 잘못된 뒤에는 후회하고 손을 써 보아야 아무 소용이 없다는 부정적 의미로 사용된다. 그러나 망양보뢰(亡羊補牢)는 "토끼를 보고서야 개를 부르려고 돌아보아도 아직 늦지 않다", 즉 견토고견(見兎顧犬 jiàn tù gù quǎn)이라는 표현과 함께, 이미 사정이 급박하게 된 상황에서라도 적절한 조치를 취하면 결코 늦지 않다고 하는 긍정적인 의미를 가지고 있다.
