濫竽充數(남우충수)

소리가 나지 않는 생황(竽 a mouth organ)을 부는 척하면서 머리숫자를 채우다.
실력도 없는 사람이 높은 자리를 차지하다.
그저 자리만 차지하고 있다.
실력이나 재능도 없으면서 끼어들어 머리숫자만 채우며 눈속임을 하고도 후한 대접을 받거나 높은 지위에 오르는 경우를 비유적으로 일컫는다.
남곽처사라고 불리는 사람이 생황을 불 줄도 모르면서 연주를 할 때마다 악사 속에 섞여 흉내만 내는 방법으로 후한 대접을 받은 고사에서 유래한다.

《韓非子 内儲說上》 齊宣王使人吹竽必三百人。 南郭處士請為王吹竽， 宣王說之， 廩食以數百人。 宣王死， 湣王立， 好一一聽之， 處士逃。
《한비자 내저설상》 제선왕사인취우필삼백인。 남곽처사청위왕취우， 선왕열(說 기쁠 열)지， 음식이수백인。 선왕사， 민왕립， 호일일청지， 처사도。
Whenever King Xuan of Qi had men play the yu(a mouth organ), there had to be 300 men playing simultaneously. A reclusive scholar, by the name of Nanguo(southern wall of a city), who was unable to play the instrument, asked if he could join the ensemble and play the yu for the king. King Xuan was delighted by this, and dispensed enough food rations for several hundred musicians. Then, King Xuan died, and King Min took the throne. He preferred to listen to the yu players one-by-one, so the reclusive scholar fled.
제(齊)나라 선왕(宣王)은 생황의 합주를 좋아하여 반드시 300명이 함께 생황을 불도록 한다. 생황을 전혀 불 줄 모르는 남곽처사(南郭處士 a reclusive scholar in the southern wall of a city 모르면서 아는 척하는 사람이나 실력도 없으면서도 높은 자리를 차지하고 있는 사람을 비유적으로 이르는 표현이다)도 선왕을 위하여 생황을 불고 싶다고 나선다. 선왕이 기뻐하며, 수백명의 합주단원이 먹기에도 충분한 많은 곡식을 내린다.

선왕이 죽고 민왕(湣王)이 즉위한다. 민왕은 생황의 독주를 좋아한다. 남곽처사는 어디론지 날쌔게 도망친다.
