玉不琢不成器(옥불탁불성기)

옥도 다듬지 않으면 그릇이 되지 아니한다.
다듬지 않은 보석은 빛이 나지 않는다.
"구슬이 서 말이라도 꿰어야 보배"라는 속담과 같은 의미이다.
아무리 소질이 좋아도 잘 닦고 기르지 않으면 훌륭하게 되지 아니한다.
배우지 않으면 도리를 알지 못한다.
"매를 아끼면 아이를 버린다"고 하는 서양속담과 같은 의미이다.
성공하기 위하여는 열심히 노력하여야 하고, 고통과 시련을 견뎌야 한다.
"고생 끝에 낙이 온다"고 하는 속담과도 비슷한 의미이다.
Jade is not cut, not a device.
A jade without chiseling will not become a useful object.
jade can't be made into a vessel without being cut and polished
A jade that is never cut will never be of use.
Jade must be chiseled before it can be considered a gem.
the finest diamond must be cut
An uncut gem goes not sparkle.
A man without learning will not know the way.
one can't become useful without being educated
One who never studies will never understand reason.
One must be educated and endure trials to succeed.
just as an uncut jade cannot become useful, an unlearned man is ignorant
a jade without chiseling will not become a useful object, a man without learning will not know the way
Spare the rod and spoil the child.

《禮記 學記》 玉不琢， 不成器。人不學， 不知道。
《예기 학기》 옥불탁， 불성기。인불학， 부지도。
The jade uncut will not form a vessel for use; and if men do not learn, they do not know the way in which they should go.
옥은 다듬지 않으면 그릇이 될 수 없고, 사람은 배우지 않으면 도리(道理 사람이 마땅히 행하거나 가야 할 바른 길)를 알지 못한다.
